Tunng: Good Arrows

Posted by Champersnova in Reviews on 08 21st, 2007 | View Comments

Tunng It hasn’t been too long since Tunng has had us mesmerized with Comments Of The Inner Chorus. I could still enjoy this tender mellowness on my iPod really. Low like vocals, Akron/Family like musical structure along with some The Microphones/Khonnor-ish sounds; this band has been a favorite of mine ever since I was grabbed by Woodcat.

After almost a year, Tunng are releasing a new record called Good Arrows (via Full Time Hobby). We are not used to see bands being this productive, are we?

Having read some slightly negative comments on this album, I was quite worried about what I was going to hear. Some thought, they are becoming more of a mainstream band, with less experimental more typical acoustic-folk tones. Thankfully, I didn’t remotely think alike once I had a listen of the new stuff.

Impressive entrance by Take, with amazing vocals and captivating electronic beats got me hypnotized already. One listen, two listens and many listens after I was truly hooked and started singing along by heart.

Bricks -first single out of this album- comes second along with all this downtempo-catchiness and somewhat tweeness.

My personal favorite in the album is Bullets. What a beauty! A dark intro, simple vocals and balanced piano in the first sight; followed by an upperbeat catchy melody with diversity of sounds and impeccable lyrics! It’s like screaming out itself “make me on-the-go and listen to me again and again”! Which I did!!

Especially tracks like Soup, Spoons and King is open proof to show that Tunng are not giving up experimenting..

Secrets, Cans, Hands are some of other outstanding songs. Personally I think, Cans is a great closer for such a soft album. So that it makes you re-play from Take on before you know.

Best thing I like about Tunng is their blending many different instruments together and adding the pure-lowly electronic beats behind into their songs. Cello, piano, guitar, bells,…etc. Which is also why I am so incredibly ambitious about seeing them live one day.

Hopes are up to get to see them during their Good Arrows tour. Recommended highly!
