Tournaments: Boldest of Colours and Lone Sailor

Posted by Flick in News on 09 11th, 2007 | View Comments

TournamentsA new British band called Tournaments is recording their debut album, and are beginning to float their demos around. In August they played their first show, and have since posted three songs on Myspace: Boldest of Colours, Turn and Run, and Lone Sailor. They posted a live performance on YouTube of Message Deleted from one of their first shows.

Gethin Pearson shared with Puddlegum that Tournaments, “have been putting together tunes for a few months with the idea of just making a fresh pop record. We recorded them underneath a boxing club in Newport, UK and in my basement.”

Tournaments mix lapsteel, violins, guitars, bass, drums and selectively layered vocals to create compelling and moody indie pop music.

“What if anything have you been running from in these treadmill dreams? You close your eyes and lay down in your bed for these nightmare themes.” The violins pulsate and a fragile guitar melody is picked as Gethen sings in Boldest of Colours.

Lone Sailor has a haunting lap-steel reverberating in the background, and an upright bass up close. “I’m not the lone sailor that I used to be. I’m not leaving land unless you’re right beside me… I’m not setting sail unless you say you’ll marry me.”

Tournaments will be performing around the UK in the coming months. Catch this band early on for intimate shows as their fan-base is bound to explode.

    about us

Puddlegum began in 1997 as one of the first online music magazines. It is managed by Flick, and has gained respect from many in the recording industry.

Over the years Puddlegum has accomplished quite a few things we are proud of:
Being mentioned by Thom Yorke during a BBC Radio interview (concerning our Tens Theory), and being written about in Rolling Stone. We have also made the front page of TUAW, Digg, and VH1’s Best Week Ever, and have been featured on USA Today, and Reuters.
