Tim Williams: When Work Is Done

We, human beings need chilling out more than anything recently. Taking it easy, letting the world outside stay at the other side of the door, appreciating the moment we are living and being on our own at times!… Sound of waves, rain, leaves; feel of breeze, wind, snowflakes; smell of soil, daffodils; sight of arty clouds, stars in the sky, a sea view would do perfectly well in order to catch this said relaxation. Or… just music simply! Melodies that make you feel that you are in that “dreamy village” when you close your eyes while listening to them. An untouched village of your own. A beauty brought to you by the chords dancing in the air, meaningful lyrics sang by a pleasant breeze- like vocals stroking your ears…
This is what I thought after listening to When Work Is Done, second studio album of talented Tim Williams which is due to release in early October. Plain and sincere… a thirty-five minute trip to your dreams… Songs- survived in Williams’ beautiful mind being eager to fade in despite the robbery took place in his apartment where he lost his computer with many songs saved in.
“Sky is now clear, do you like what you see? I do” is how Tim Williams welcomes you in your personal village of dreams. First lines of Novel; the opener and the first single of the album with a lovely intro sounding like Let’s Call It Off of Peter, Bjorn and John but leading to a far different direction as the melody moves on. A splendid choice for a first single; catchy, honeyed and ruling the general sound of the whole album with diligently written words showing off in between lyrics!
To And From Tomorrow, the second tune in When Work Is Done is another well written piece, making you face with yourself and your dreams which is dressing the melody with tiny little electronic ornaments at the same time.
Then a soft reprehension to life – Bills; a dare to oneself and disappointments again with impressive words – Stop Your Kidding and a harrowing, touching ballad – I Am Wearing It come over, leaving us emotionally overwhelmed. In a positive way apparently…
As Lessons begins, you are lying on your dream grass and watching the leaves swinging around your oak tree. An addictive melody gripping you immediately with its slow intro and never letting you go again as it brings forward the catchy chorus, making you sing along with the trembling leaves of your oak tree in the shadow.. It is like one of those songs that you keep singing even though it is long gone already… Hence, this one is my favorite!
It Builds & Explodes – one of the most outstanding tracks in the album dips you even deeper into the dream with its easily remembered entrance and promising melody. You take a deep breathe with Tape Your Head which makes us recall The Shins at their best before another amazing ballad –also one of my favorites too – So Hard to Leave shows up. A special tune in the album which reminds me of the delicate ambiance of 70s movies. Young people walking down shores, having their hair flitting in the air, with colorful tartan designed clothes on… Having round trips on phaetons in “the village”, thinking of memorable longings, yearning for the missed ones…
Stuck in such an emotional traffic, you are returning to “life” by a slow, mild whisper: Drink A Little… probably to go back again as soon as possible! Well, it’s only a blink away from your eyes after all… What would you be waiting for?
