The Best Children’s Albums Ever

Posted by Netzley in Music on 08 26th, 2008 | View Comments

Inspired by today’s post by Boing Boing about Kimya Dawson’s new children’s album Alphabutt, I made a list of children’s albums for a friend today and thought I should share for all you parents. These are albums you will like as much as your kids.

Elizabeth Mitchell – You are My Flower
Taking a step away from her work with Ida, Elizabeth Mitchell has created some wonderful kids albums which you shouldn’t miss. This is a great album for rainy and relaxing days, and for grown ups and kids alike. Don’t miss her other albums as well, You are My Flower and You are My Little Bird.

Frances England – Fascinating Creatures
Much like Elizabeth Mitchell, Frances England brings a little folk and a lot of love to her music. Here are some lyrics, “I’ll ride the Tour de France in my underpants/Alp D’Huez, chasing Lance/Pedal faster and close the gap/At a hundred miles an hour there’s no time for naps.” Need I say more.

Dan Zanes – Night Time
He’s got quirky lyrics and nice simple arangements. On this particular album, of which he has many all of which are good, Aimee Mann and Lou Reed show up to lend a hand. He has a whole host of albums and from what I can tell you’ll like them all.

Renee & Jeremy – Its a Big World
Another wonderful and soft album that will have you playing it when your kids aren’t looking

Peter Himmelman – My Green Kite
Some of the arrangements on this album are complex enough to pass up many artists making music for adults but they are built for kids through and through.

Various Artists – For the Kids
This has Billy Bragg and Wilco and Tom Waites on it. Yep, it has some gems.

Various Artists – Jazz For kids
Every kids needs to learn how to appreaciate jazz. This one includes Ella Fitzgerald singing Old Mcdonald.

Johny Cash – The Johny Cash Children’s Album
Not a joke. He has one and it has wonderful music on it. With Cash’s simple song writing and titles like Nasty Dan, Dinosaur Song, and Why is a Fire Engine Red, how can it not be good.

Woody Guthrie – Songs to Grow on for Mother and Child
From the song writing master himself comes a childrens album full of grassy grass, swimmy swim, and washy wash. He influenced Dylan and now he can influence your children too.
