How do you familiarize the younger generation with your catalogue of music, forty years after your vinyls were originally pressed? Release a Rock Band game on Microsoft’s Xbox, of course! The Beatles announced today that they are doing just that. The Beatles: Rock Band will land on 09.09.09.
The Beatles: Rock Band will follow the band’s career, from their ’50’s influenced pop to their early ’70’s psychedelic songs. The younger generation will not only hear The Beatles, but they will be The Beatles, letting their hair grow long as they progress through The Beatles’ career.
Standing in front of a crowd of screaming fans, Ringo Starr had this to say about The Beatles: Rock Band, “The game is good. The graphics are very good, and we look great!” Paul McCartney added, “We love the game, it’s fantastic. Who would have ever thought we would end up as androids?” Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison were also at the press event to represent the deceased members of the fab four.
What is intriguing about this announcement is that The Beatles still refuse to release their music digitally. You cannot purchase any of their music on iTunes, Amazon Mp3, or other digital stores. This is due in part because of a drawn out lawsuit between Apple, their record label, and Apple Computers, who own iTunes. Instead, fans that purchase music legally are forced to search for their music on CDs.
Seeing that few teenagers purchase CDs, teens will most likely resort to piracy in order to upload The Beatles to their iPod. It would seem logical that if The Beatles truly want to capitalize on the younger generation then they would ink a deal with Apple (the compute company, not their label).
Will this announcement be followed by the digital release of their music? We shall see.
