The Shins: The Phantom Leak

Posted by Flick in Uncategorized on 11 30th, 2006 | View Comments

The Shins @ The MetroThe Shins are taking pre-orders for their new album, Wincing the Night Away, their first release in over three years, shipping January 23. The Shins are offering $2 off the regular Sub Pop price, for a reasonable $11. When you order the album the band will send you "really rad gift cards that have some funny circle-your-feelings slash most-appropriate-answer text inside."

Fans of The Shins collaborated over 200 video clips from digital cameras and cell phones, recording their performance at The Austin City Limits Festival on September 16. Douglas Caballero and Alex Simmons announced their plan to create the video by informing fans on the Internet and handing out hundreds of flyers, asking everyone to bring their cameras. The Shins contributed their single, Phantom Limb, giving Douglas and Alex a soundtrack for the video. They used at least one clip from each submission, and may have started a new form of live videos. The video is titled "All Eyes On The Shins!" – The Performance of "Phantom Limb", with a Part 2 coming soon. Current.TV is hosting the video, a website that boasts of viewer content created by and for the viewers.

Wincing the Night Away was leaked on the internet on October 20, three months before album release date. Monotone Management confirmed with Puddlegum that the album leak was not the final version. How this will affect the sale of the album is uncertain, but it's safe to say that this may be a reason for the $11 deal the band is offering their fans; give fans a reason to buy the album they already have on their iPods, and capitalize on the buzz generated from the leak. Let's hope that fans will support the band, not just steal from them.

The Phantom Limb +2
single was released on November 21 with two bonus tracks: Nothing at All and and alternate version of Split Needles.

about us

Puddlegum began in 1997 as one of the first online music magazines. It is managed by Flick, and has gained respect from many in the recording industry.

Over the years Puddlegum has accomplished quite a few things we are proud of:
Being mentioned by Thom Yorke during a BBC Radio interview (concerning our Tens Theory), and being written about in Rolling Stone. We have also made the front page of TUAW, Digg, and VH1’s Best Week Ever, and have been featured on USA Today, and Reuters.
