For the past two years Murcof has been writing compositions for the past two years with the aim of reflecting the awe of a starry night. Fernando Corona, who writes under the name of Murcof, will release Cosmos on September 17. Cosmos, “composed almost entirely of recordings of classical instruments,” is made up of six tracks, and will be released on CD and triple vinyl through UK’s The Leaf Label.
Fernando Corona explained the album:
“’Cosmos’ basically comes from that state of wonder and mystery and joy and humbling that you get when you let your mind wander freely on a starry night, away from the contamination of city lights. From the realization that there’s an infinite universe outside the man-made world and how silly this latter one seems in comparison.”
Murcof relocated from Tijauna to Barcelona in 2000, and is planning “a European tour of planetariums,” in support of his new album.
The Leaf Label describes the differences between Cosmos and Remembranza, dedicated to his mother who passed away in 2005:
“His past approach involved mixing disembodied orchestral passages amidst microbeats, letting a song shift and mutate in a minimal environment. With ‘Cosmos’, he has progressed towards a more sophisticated compositional mode. The immensity of tracks like the monolithic twins ‘Cosmos I’ and ‘Cosmos II’ draw to mind the work of the German electronic pioneers of the ‘70s or the Hungarian composer György Ligeti as much as the visceral, low-end rumblings of SunnO))) or Coil. Murcof’s compositions have always been as much about the absence of sound as what you actually hear, and these techniques are further refined here.” (The Leaf Label)
Along with writing and recording Cosmos, Fernando Corona has scored for three feature films, such as La Sangre Illuminada (Enlightened Blood). In 2006 Fernando won a Quartz Music Award for his work in film and TV. Examples of his work with film can be viewed at YouTube.
