Matt Pond PA: The Dark Leaves LP

Matt Pond PA: StartingWhat was a side project for Matt Pond PA, The Dark Leaves is now turning into a full-length album. The songs on the album were originally going to be released under Matt Pond PA’s name, but they were scrapped and reworked as a side project, The Dark Leaves. Altitude Records is now releasing The Dark Leaves in February, 2010.

As Puddlegum quoted Matt Pond in January, 2007, “We threw away songs — ended up with four. Four. We’ll finish them over the summer, assigning it all to our new side title, The Dark Leaves — wherein all reward, responsibility and frustration will be shared equally.’”

The side project never fully materialized and the songs and are now reappearing as a Matt Pond PA full-length album, their eighth. Leading up to the February release, Matt Pond PA is prepping the album with three 7″ vinyls. Side-A of each 7″ will feature a new song from the upcoming full-length. Side-B will be unreleased b-sides plus an instrumental. Their press release states:

“Each 7″ will artfully arranged by a consistent theme and are setting it up that if you have all three 7″, you will be able to cube them all, details to follow, but trust us, it’s going to be out of this world!”

In November, 2008, Matt Pond PA gave the world The Freeep, as a free download (hence the name), and kept the link on his site for 10 months. The label rereleased The Freeep as Auri Sacra Fames, which means ‘the holy lust for gold,’ and on September 1st the link was removed (without his knowing).

Matt Pond (minus his band) is performing in Andrew Kenny’s Wooden Birds, and touring with Great Lake Swimmers. Matt explained on his site:

“These shows coming up… they’re solely The Wooden Birds. No mpPA. My position is to backup another person’s/band’s music… Fortunately, just so happens to be one of me favorite bands out there to put a coordinated sequence of notes and words together.”
