Matt Death and the New Intellectuals: to debut with Death On Pacific
Matt Wignall of Havalina Rail Company is now the artist known as Matt Death. Havalina has ended their 14 year stint, but Wignall has a new band: Matt Death and The New Intellectuals. The new lineup includes former Havalina players, minus the brilliant Orlando Greenhill.
No date has been announced, but The New Intellectuals have a debut coming called Death On Pacific, to be released this spring on Monarchy Music. Four songs from the upcoming release can be streamed on their MySpace: Sugar, The Pike, Coastal Town, and For Winter.
The sound of the New Intellectuals heavily emphasizes the organ, played by David Maust. Ecuadorian Erick Diego Nieto plays drums, as he did in Havalina. Orlando Nieto, brother of Erick, was brought in on bass.
In 2004 Havlina began to record Pacific, their sixth album. Spending ten months recording the album, Matt Wignall claims that it was their best work to date. Unfortunately, Orlando Greenhill decided to leave the band and Pacific was never released. Matt Death and the New Intellectuals was born out of the breakup of Havalina.
To celebrate the fourteen years that Havalina Rail Company was together, We Remember Anarchy was digitally released, "the 26 song retrospective spanning over a decade of Havalina music." They made the album available as a free 90mb zip file on their website. Havalina has also made Russian Lullabies album available as a free download.
Matt Wignall is primarily a photographer who plays music on the side. He has photographed for Cold War Kids, My Brightest Diamond, Sufjan Stevens, and shoots for Matte Black, Volcom, and Initium Eyewear. He has also produced and recorded music for Cold War Kids and Ike Owens.
