Maia Hirasawa: Though, I’m Just Me coming to US

Artists that succeed in Sweden have a tendency to be picked up in the US indie market, and Maia Hirasawa will most likely be the next Swede that we fall in love with. Her sound is timeless and her debut album, Though, I’m Just Me, had a huge success in Scandinavia, selling more than 20,000 unites (certified “gold” in Sweden) and charting her single in the top ten when her album was originally released in April, 2007 through Razzia Records. Thrive Records is aiming to extend her success to the US on February 17, 2009.

Maia Hirasawa not only played most of the instruments on the album, she also produced, recorded, and arranged all of the songs in a cottage in Skåne and in her terrace house in Sollentuna, Sweden. While recording the album she brought in members of Loney Dear, Sekten and Vapnet to add horns and strings. She mixes piano, cello, and horns with typical rock set-up of guitar, bass and drums to create an album with a retrospective feel. Half Japanese, Maia is also an experienced Jazz singer and sang with Hello Saferide.

Maia Hirasawa talked about her album: “When I was doing my album, I wanted it to have this classic touch. I like the Beach Boys and the Beatles and Swedish indie bands like Eggstone that I listened to when I was 15 years old. I also love Rufus Wainwright.”
