John R. Williamson: recording new album
John R. Williamson is beginning to record his next album, following Portable Shrine that he independently released in 2006. Robert Deeble has long supported John R. Williamson in the studio, and this album will be no different as Deeble has begun tracking from Seattle.
Film music composer Istvan Peter Bracz will be adding to the project from his home in Connecticut. Chris Hickey will be recording vocals, recently having backed Joe Henry. Sam Phillips has also agreed to add her touch.
John R. Williamson performs frequently in Los Angeles with his band, the C’est La Vies; his acoustic is backed up by drums, cello, and violin. August 11 will find John and band singing at a gallery in Long Beach, and on September 1 John will be performing in Whittier.
Williamson has received critical praise for previous albums; Paste Magazine lauded Maybe in a Shade You Don’t Know. T Bone Burnett nominated John during an interview with GQ Magazine as his favorite Secret Musical Genius, saying:
“It has this mesmerizing cadence and old-world language, and the execution is effortless, languid and deeply optimistic. I’ve got a lot of John’s songs now, and a few of his paintings. His extraordinarily benevolent music has insinuated itself into my life in an important way. John’s stuff does not fit. One could call John an outsider artist, but he is more outside than that. If his music were any more quiet, you would have to play it yourself to hear it.”
