Elliott Smith: New Moon coming on May 7

Posted by Flick in Uncategorized on 02 14th, 2007 | View Comments

Elliott Smith promoElliott Smith will posthumously release a new album called New Moon, a dual-disc that will feature 24 rarities recorded between 1995-1997 while Elliott Smith was signed with Kill Rock Stars during the Either/Or era. Domino Records will release the album in Europe on May 7, while Kill Rock Stars will release it on May 8, 2007. "Like his other work, New Moon reflects the power of Smith's ability to integrate rich, melodic music with poetic, multi-layered lyrics."

According to the press release by Kill Rock Stars, "The final mixing for the double cd was done by Larry Crane, who is the archivist for the estate of Elliott Smith. A significant portion of proceeds from the album sales will go directly to Outside In, a Portland-based social service organization dedicated to providing diverse services for homeless youth and low-income adults."

Charlie Ramirez, maintainer of Sweet Adeline, shared with Puddlegum in September, 2006 that Larry Crane would be involved with New Moon. This sparked excitement and discussions around the Internet concerning the validity, and about which songs would be included on the album. Ramirez shared what turned out to be true:

"I know that it will cover unreleased songs from Elliott's KRS years, and might include previously released music but like bsides or even alternative versions of songs. They are in the process of working on it and I know Larry Crane is planning to be a part of it as well. He will probably go to L.A. to listen to some of Elliott's work that is in storage and see if there is anything he can use."

New Moon was originally slated to be released on March 17, though very little information about the album had been released until this point.

The press release closes with, "Elliott Smith died October 21, 2003, in his home in Los Angeles. To date the coroner has been unable to determine the cause of death, and the investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department remains open."
