Efterklang’s new album, Magic Chairs, is approaching fast: February 22nd in Europe and 23rd in North America. The band signed to 4AD Records in September, 2009, marking a major step forward for this Danish act.
Rasmus Stolberg and band members manage their Copenhagen-based record label, Rumraket, and have been the Danish home for Grizzly Bear, Taxi Taxi!, Amiina (Sigur Rós’ string section) and many others.
Efterklang’s earlier work was in line with Múm and Tunng, exploiting bells and children’s toys with rich instrumentation. Known for spending 18 months in the studio with 30 additional musicians, Magic Chairs is described as a “more organic and close-knit affair and a marked departure for the band in terms of approach and execution.” We can hear the change with their first single, Mordern Drift, wich was NPR’s song of the day on Friday, January 22nd.
4AD’s press release for Magic Chairs quotes the band:
“We are very proud of this record and feel that it introduces a new Efterklang sound. The songs draw inspiration from pop song structures, created and recorded with a live approach and we wanted to display every sound source clearly so that the listener can hear every ingredient of the music.”
Efterklang is made up of four core members: Mads Brauer, Casper Clausen, Thomas Husmer and Rasmus Stolberg. They’re joined by three members when they tour to replicate the layers that can be done in the studio.
Speaking of live performances, Efterklang will tour North America in March, Europe in April, with more dates TBA. Tour dates are listed below.
