There is a new network for bands called Bandcamp that is well worth your time. Artists can sign up for an account and create a page. Here are a few things that Bandcamp is doing that sets it apart:

Bands can sell their digital music (or give it away for free). When fans download your music they decide what format and quality to download the files in… Mp3, AAC, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, or Apple Lossless. To accomplish this, Bandcamp requires that you upload the songs in AIFF or WAV format, and they handle the conversions.

“We provide fast, dependable streaming and downloads of your entire catalog, and we do it for free. Give away your music, sell it for a set price, or let your fans name their price — it’s up to you.”

You have the option of allowing fans to set the price of the downloads (think Radiohead), or you can set the price yourself. Provide your PayPal information to receive payments for downloads. At this point Bandcamp doesn’t take a percentage (they’re still determining what it’ll be, but promise it’ll be less than 15%).

Your music spreads in a viral fashion (Bandcamp is calling Viral Distribution), as fans embed your songs around the web. The audio players have an option to download the song, taking them to your Bandcamp page.
The set “includes 3 classic Sigur Ros albums – Agaetis Byrjun, (), and Takk. Also included in this set is Smaskifa, which has never before been released in a 12″ vinyl format. These 7 pieces of vinyl come encased in a hard cover book, and slip into 7 individually customized sleeves,” released through Artist in Residence.

These limited edition sets are individually numbered and foil stamped, with fifty autographed copies being shipped out at random. In A Frozen Sea is available for $150. The 32-page hardback book covers a year’s journey when Sigur Ros toured the world during the Takk tour, available for $20.

The Artist in Residence website is designed to resemble a music room, screening room, gallery, library, and recording studio. The content changes with each resident artist, showcasing their music and art. Currently Sigur Ros is the showcased artist, and every song on In A Frozen Sea is streamed. In the music room, simply drag the LP you want to listen to into a white frame and an animated vinyl is loaded onto a turn-table. After you have loaded the player, you can continue surfing their site.

You’ll also find that ten of the album’s photographs of Icelandic beauty are available in print, 11×14 for $200, and 16×20 for $250. Nine music videos, are streamed in a screening room, and reels can be loaded onto a reel-to-reel player in the A+R studio room, as you read about the studio engineers that started A+R. In the lounge room you can click on the radio tuner and listen to other bands on A+R, Akira The Don, Amiina, Band Marino, Marnie Stern, Rodeo Massacre, and Warren Suicide. The website is well worth the exploration and you may find yourself falling in love with the other bands that A+R are working with.

Along with the website, A+R is a quarterly print publication. A+R is directed by Flood (U2, Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails, Smashing Pumpkins, The Killers) and Alan Moulder (My Bloody Valentine, Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Depeche Mode, Arctic Monkeys).

“A+R is a publication developed for artists who want to showcase issues of central importance in their world. The Parameters placed upon the artists are limitless, and issues my cover topics such as: music, art, literature, film, and politics.
The intrigue surrounding Radiohead's seventh album has only a little to do with what the music will sound like. After a few years of inactivity, rock's most consistently innovative (some might say consistently frustrating) band debuted 13 songs on tour last year that alternate between misanthropy and romance, feedback and melody. Even if they weren’t really good, and a number of them were, they would have inevitably been hailed as masterpieces by the group's admirers. No band has as many weeping acolytes among people who make a regular contribution to a 401(k).

While Radiohead keeps refining and writing with producer Nigel Godrich (there's still no release date), other matters remain unclear, such as who, if anyone, will be releasing the as-yet-untitled album. The group's contract with EMI ran out in 2003, and although a number of suitors have come calling at the band's Oxford, England, headquarters, they have so far been rebuffed. A spokesman says if the group does sign with a record label, it will be for only a single album. Shortly before the band started writing new songs, singer Thom Yorke told TIME, "I like the people at our record company, but the time is at hand when you have to ask why anyone needs one. And, yes, it probably would give us some perverse pleasure to say ‘F___ you’; to this decaying business model."
