From the Asthmatic Kitty press release:
It’s been a while since Half-handed Cloud released a full-length album. But in this age of alternative distribution methods and so-called “new media,” HHC is bravely eschewing the Ringtone n’ MP3 for the old Vinyl n’ Live.

The live bit: Half-handed Cloud will be touring with Olympia-based Lake, beginning the tour from HHC’s homebase in California, to Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Tennessee, Georgia, and then back up to New York. They’re traveling this time around with the Olympia-based musical entourage, Lake, whose musical expansion should contrast well with HHC’s DIY minimalism. See below for tourdates.

The vinyl bit: HHC also just finished up the third in the Unusual Animals vinyl series, taking up one flip of the 7″ wax with piano, silvertone guitar, pump organ, trombone, plus snare-drum and floor-tom in a concise two-and-half minute track titled, Sewing Wind to Fabric. His friends Bert Hiscock and Nedelle Torrisi (Cryptacize) assisted with this song on cello and violin. On the other side of the record are grooves that, when played against a specially designed needle, emanate the addictive and confusing Lite FM pop of Ariel Pink, with Before Today. We are unveiling this little gem in －CH=CH2 form (aka vinyl), complete with cover by illustrator Jared Chapman, here on our website on or around May 20.

After years of recording in relative seclusion in the hills of Los Angeles, Ariel Pink (the first non-Animal Collective member on the Paw Tracks roster) made his official Paw Tracks debut with The Doldrums. Recording at home with a guitar, bass, keyboard, and 8-track (the drum sounds are all unbelievably created with his mouth), Ariel Pink blends Lite FM and warped lo-fi pop into something beautiful and confusing, yet highly addictive. Ariel Pink’s excess of ideas, alongside his determination to make music from a trance-like state of privacy, places him among characters like R Stevie Moore, Daniel Johnston, or a young Kate Bush.

Full of spirited humor, Half-handed Cloud dissolves any obstacles standing in the way of his innocent bulldozing, jam-packing a sixties sensibility, the touch of a lullaby, and murmurs of divine redemption into micro-narrative and Casio sound effects. Just as fingers begin to snap in time, the artist wraps it up and crackles to conclusion. A trombonist since the age of ten, Ringhofer picked up the guitar as a teenager while recovering from toe surgery. Watching the artist equip himself with the sounds of a 1960’s era Sears particleboard guitar, air organ, chattering dolls, stomping on the kitchen floor, and various sixties-pop influences, one may begin to perceive an invisible pattern in the songster’s art deco rug.

Instead, Ben has announced a “free form” project called Just Jazzin’ in the spirit of Miles Davis and John Coltrane. This news comes just days after releasing the first single of Death Cab for Cutie’s new album, Narrow Stairs. According to his Myspace, Lionel Hampton, Bobby Hutcherson, and Milt Jackson are also involved in his Just Jazzin’ project.

“….there’s this side of me and my music that desires a lack of structure and Just Jazzin’ does that for me because I am allowed to just play whatever note comes into my head,” his Myspace explains.

And if you believed that Gibbard was serious, you’ve been April Fooled.

When Facebook began to allow people to create ad campaigns, they needed a way to filter out offensive ads, such as ads for adult websites. Their solution was to block words and phrases that many would deem as inappropriate, mainly swear words.

Among the words that made this list was Myspace, Orkut, and Xanga, thus preventing ads that would point traffic to their competitors. Don’t believe me? Try creating an ad campaign and type “Myspace” in the body or a link to a Myspace page, click on the Continue button, and you’ll see these words in red: “The text contains a blocked word or phrase.”

Don’t feel so sorry for Myspace though. Nearly a year ago Myspace began to prevent members from embedding flash players from Vidilife, Stickam, and Revver. In March Myspace added imeem to this list, but recanted in June, 2007. This appeared to be a flinch since it came at a time when imeem exploded onto the scene.

UPDATE: imeem has informed Puddlegum: “I believe that right now imeem is back on the blocked list at Myspace.”

It’s not as if Myspace is trying to clean up their website; in October, Myspace announced they will be launching an API platform, allowing their cluttered site to be filled with applications similar to Facebook apps.

Why would Facebook inconspicuously block the names of a few of their competitors? Two reasons: to maintain an ounce of control over the content in the news feeds, and to limit outclicks to their competitors. Myspace’s decision to block certain flash players is motivated from a similar desire to stem the migration away from their network.

People don’t appreciate control, especially when it’s meant to be their space to express themselves. Maybe the networking sites should take notes from the music industry’s failure with the DRM and stop blocking their competitors.

Dave Fischoff is beginning a remix project called Spoolwork. His first remix is one of Jens Lekman’s I’m Leaving You Because I Don’t Love You, making it available as a free download on the Spoolwork’s Myspace page.

Both Dave Fischoff and Jens Lekman are signed to Secretly Canadian; the two toured together in the autumn months of `07. Taking an interesting approach at remixing this song, Fischoff hadn’t heard Lekman’s original version before Jens sent him the vocal track.

Dave explained to Puddlegum:

“with Spoolwork I’m trying my hand at working more collaboratively. For this first remix, Jens sent me only a vocal track and I built up the song structure and arrangement around his voice, before I’d ever heard his version of the song. We’re both really happy with the way it turned out.”

Artists that are interested in having their music remixed can contact Dave Fischoff via Myspace. “If you’re a band or a solo artist looking for someone to do some remix work, or put together an arrangement or a beat for one of your songs, feel free to drop me a line through the Spoolwork Myspace page. This first one was a lot of fun and I’m looking forward to doing more work like it!”

Dave Fischoff has released three albums on Secretly Canadian since he signed with them in `98, with his latest being The Crawl. Working with a large resource of sound samples (accessing the Chicago Public Library’s collection of sounds) he put distractions aside as he mixed in his basement apartment close to downtown Chicago. Spoolwork will act as a nice reprieve before he releases his next album.
