Having recorded each performance, they’re releasing a vinyl compilation set on Record Store Day (April 17th, 2010). It Happened Here will be a limited print LP and 7″ set; 750 will be pressed to be exact.

The list of artists is quite impressive: Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Lou Barlow, The Delicious, Maps & Atlases, Rooms, Magnolia Electric Co., Tremendous Fucking, The Entrance Band, Prizzy Prizzy Please, Wovenhand, Alexander the Great, Damien Jurado, Whoa!Tiger, and Phosphorescent.

The 7″ consists of two live in-store performances at Landlocked Music, called Live At Landlocked Music, and the LP will have twelve tracks recorded at Russian Recording Studio, called We Just Call It Roulette V.III.

David Woodruff (The Delicious) of Woodruff & Sons and In Case Of Emergency Press are designing the artwork. The work of David Woodruff can be seen on many flyers, album covers, and t-shirts around Bloomington.

Engineer Mike Bridavsky moved Russian Recording to Bloomington in 2008, located at the previous home of Secretly Canadian Records. Bridavsky has managed to keep his rates affordable for local artists without sacrificing the quality of equipment.

Landlocked Records is one of the best vinyl stores in the Midwest, located in downtown Bloomington. Landlocked is always stocked with the best and most obscure indie artists. They opened on March 3rd, 2006, so this announcement couldn’t come at a better time.

The band has posted two songs for a limited time as a free download. Promoted as a “zero inch”, side A of the digital single is a demo of Don’t Stop, with a remix of I Got Fat on side B (originally on Dark Dark Woods), remixed by Matt Coleman.

Their upcoming full-length album has been described as being more ‘upbeat,’ compared to their latest album, Dark Dark Woods. Mike Adams shared with Puddlegum that the songs on their latest and current albums were songs the band wrote in preparation for Dark Dark Woods. They purposefully released the set of mellower songs first with plans of following it with an edgier album.

The members of Husband&Wife manage a local label called XRA Records (Crossroads of America Records), and have released 23 albums from regional artists, including a vinyl release for Starflyer 59. They’re also actively involved in numerous side projects and performing bands in Bloomington, such as Either/Or, Frank Schweikhardt, Alexander the Great, and Prayer Breakfast.

HallAs I have been sifting through stacks of local artists in Bloomington, I was taken aback when I heard E.P. Hall‘s new album. Opening with the caw of a crow, Mommy Crow is a compelling twelve track that deserves the attention of listeners who enjoy thoughtful music. E.P. Hall is predominately the work of Elise Percy and Andy Goheen of Sticky and the Bees (Andy books shows at The Bishop). An acoustic album, Mommy Crow rests on Elise’s vocals that ruminate on each word and cut through to the soul.

Having released her first demo EP in 2006, Elise Percy admits that her studies for a P.H. D in sciences at Indiana University have slowed her down from her musical journey… until now. As her bio points out, her “preoccupation with philosophy and psychological science,” is evident from, “symbols, word games, and a tangible emotional intensity.”

Mommy Crow is a pensive folk album that mixes in strings, story book narratives, and various sounds such as the wind. The acoustic guitar carries the listener through the album, as though one were walking along, leafing through the pages of Mommy Crow.

E.P. Hall - Mommy Crow

Mommy Crow is being released in the UK and Europe via IFF-Transponder on November 24th, and E.P. Hall is having a CD release party three days earlier at The Bishop. She will then embark on a lengthy tour immediately after the release party, staying on the road well into the spring months while touring the US and Canada. In March, E.P. Hall will tour Europe with Drekka (BlueSanct), returning to the US in April, 2010.

Frank Schweikhardt is one of the many Bloomington artists I’m excited about. His debut full-length, Life But No More, is coming out on November 17th on Bloomington’s Crossroads of America Records, and it’s one of those albums that you feel intimately attached to after a few listens. Frank recorded the album with several seasoned Bloomington artists: Mike Adams (husband&wife), Tim Felton (husband&wife), and Zac Canale (Morrow). You’ll find him on sporadic tours when he isn’t driving the tour bus for other bands.

Starting out in the regional bands Away With Vega, then playing with Rodeo Ruby Love, Frank immediately has the attention of listeners in the Midwest. He initially released a solo album under the name orangeyellored in 2007, but began performing under his own name in 2008 with the release of Gift EP.

His music is acoustic-driven and downbeat with sleepy vocals. “Give me life, but no more,” he asks in Softer. With religious undertones in a few of the songs yet always within view of intimacy with others, Frank writes very reflective lyrics. “I did my work, but not a finger more,” he admits.

A favorite song of ours is Twin Cities. It happens to be the most upbeat song on the album, though that isn’t to discredit the slower songs by any means. “I didn’t see the goodness that she had,” he sings, then echoing the lyrical pattern, “She didn’t want the goodness that I had.” The organ is brooding, with guitar slides in the background that help develop the mood of the song.

I think you’ll enjoy Frank’s Life But No More if you love David Bazan‘s quieter music. It will be available on vinyl, CD, and in digital format on November 17th.

According to Andy Goheen (Sticky and the Bees, E.P. Hall) who organizes shows for The Bishop, Bloomington has over 500 bands.

Shortly after moving here Nicole O’Neal (Hipster Spinster) asked me to co-host a radio show with her. We decided to call it Sound In Bloom Radio, and WIUX gave us a great slot at 7pm on Tuesday. We play mostly local music, as well as artists touring through Bloomington. This has been a great opportunity to get to know the scene better. To my surprise, I was honored as the WIUX DJ of the month!

I’d like to write about local artists and issues that the scene faces, venues that I enjoy, labels that have interesting lineups, and recording studios. I think you’ll find this helpful… as issues Bloomington face are not necessarily unique to our college town, and I think you’ll discover new artists to get excited about. You’re already familiar with the Bloomington labels: Secretly Canadian, Jagjaguwar, and Dead Oceans.

Some artists I’ll be writing about soon (though the list is far from complete): E.P. Hall, Frank Schweikhardt, husband&wife, Delicious, DM Stith, Kentucky Nightmare, Totally Michael, Prizzy Prizzy Please, Redbird, Tammar, and many others.

As I’ve been listening to the local music I keep asking myself which local artists are ready for the national stage, and who would I feel comfortable promoting on Puddlegum. I’m going to begin writing about Bloomington artists, labels, and venues on Puddlegum, and when I do I’ll place the posts in the Bloomington category.

Not to bore you with the details, but I’m doing this for several reasons. For one, I don’t want Puddlegum to simply become a Bloomington blog, yet I do wish to help out artists that I believe need the exposure. For the readers that are interested, you’ll be able to filter the Bloomington related posts. But the main reason for the Bloomington category is so I can aggregate the stories on the Sound In Bloom blog that we are developing.
