Butterfly Explosion

Butterfly ExplosionIt has been more than a year since I randomly heard a song called Sophia on Myspace. It was a dreamy chilling tune capturing your attention out of the blue. Especially when it is all quiet at very late night! I generally tend to avoid those heaps of add requests from countless Myspace bands but it was hard to skip this one as the name of the band was getting on the show perfectly: Butterfly Explosion. Which suddenly reminded me of Explosions in the Sky firstly because of the common word in the name and secondly because I was obsessed with The Earth Is Now A Cold Dead Place around that time. Later on I would learn that Explosions In The Sky is one of the influences of The Butterfly Explosion along with some other legendary names of post – rock / shoegaze world – such as; Mogwai, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Low, Sonic Youth

Once Sophia was warmly welcomed on my side, I started digging the band with curiosity. A five-peace band from Dublin – Ireland who had released an EP called Vision already (which is now available for free download on the official site) and were about to release a new one called Turn The Sky. Second time I was deeply impressed by the band was when I heard the Vision tune. Instrumental, dark and way too Explosions In The Sky-esque admiringly! It was like watching the sunset alone in a forest! Just like the cover image would say so… Noisy – like rustling of leaves, chilly – like the feel of afternoon wind, glaring – like the last touches of sun light on earth.

Butterfly Explosion - Turn The SkyBefore long, Turn The Sky was out and I was once again amazed by this dreamy quintet. I still am! Such a haunting record with Gazz Carr’s cotton-soft vocals, highly noticeable- dominating shoegaze elements, noisy guitar, engaging ambiance of instrumental Car Park, a new generation My Bloody Valentine sounding Chemistry, my first Butterfly Explosion love Sophia… and the list goes on!

After two acclaimed EPs and several shows with several bands such as: God Is An Astronaut, 65 Days of Static, Howling Bells, Soundpool… in the UK and over the pond; Butterfly Explosion has developed a sentient fanbase already who is wating impatiently for album #1! They are soon to support God Is An Astonaut again, in a Club AC30 organization.

[October 30 - Club AC30, Hoxton Bar & Kitchen, LONDON]

It is hard to adopt a band these days. I mean it is not like 60s, 70s, 80s or 90s anymore. Where the folk picked a band and got attached to it in rather a fanatic way. There are too many options today so that we all feel free to screw up our noses at many of them or simply skip giving a shot. Probably the main reason of this is that a significant amount of new bands are like a “copy and paste” of some pioneer bands left in the past.

In my humble opinion, being influenced by someone and imitating someone are two different concepts like black and white. Not every indie (or unsigned – not sure what an indie is anymore!) is original or quality, nor every mainstream is bitterly commercial. Music is going somewhere outlandish! And in this complicatedly intense state of bands, I am pleased that I can still adopt some few bands who are waiting for their turns to climb up the steps. Not imitating but hailing to the masters of genres; not mumbling but being direct, not working out a calculation but speaking its heart out.

Butterfly Explosion are simply one of those names I have noted down as “up and coming”. And this is an open recommendation for anyone after the “noise” and “feelings” defragmented with the music itself!

I can’t get over how cool the name is. It fits them well. Like a small but colorful explosion. Thanks for sharing.
