Benzos: Branches out August 7

BenzosBenzos is releasing their sophomore disc, Branches, on August 7 through Stinky Records. Their sound builds on tight production to create atmospheric trip-hop. Their influences range from house music, hip hop, experimental electronic, and underground dance, fueling the band’s infectious beats.

Benzos has been playing spotted shows through the summer with a fall tour in the works. The band is known for improvising during live sets, calling it “live remixing.”

Forming in 2003 in New York City, their second show was a showcase at CMJ, and have been playing every year since, being invited to play four CMJ showcases in 2006. Spin.com picked up on the band after their “breakout performance” at this year’s Bonnaroo, stating that Benzos is “poised to blow up.”

“Branches combines the melodic allure of Doves, the sprawling dynamics of Explosions In the Sky and the minimalist yet intense complexity of Aphex Twin, to develop a unique blend of ambient, emotionally resonant guitar and synth instrumentation, ‘mashed up’ with tight, bottom-heavy, intensely funky rhythm section grooves.” (Sneak Attack Media)

Recorded in the summer of 2006, Branches was co-produced by Steve Wright and Woody Ranere, a composer and sound designer for movies.
