Arctic Monkeys: 85,000 in 24 hours

Arctic MonkeysThe Arctic Monkeys have launchd a world-wide tour after their sophomore release, Favourite Worst Nightmare, was unwrapped by thousands of fans on April 23. The album sold 85,000 units in the first 24 hours. The three month tour began in North America and will continue in Europe, ending in August when the band plays in Tokyo.

The Arctic Monkeys' success points to the rise of the Internet's significance in the changing music industry. Due to friends swapping files and posting music on the web, two of the bands' singles hit #1 on UK charts without any official marketing or promotion. Word of mouth spread quickly about the band and fans created a buzz that would be quite costly for a traditional marketing scheme to generate.

The independent Domino Records signed the band and have carried the momentum up to this point. "Their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not became the fastest-selling debut album in British music history and received critical acclaim, winning the 2006 Mercury Prize." (Wikipedia) Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not sold 363,735 albums in the first week.

The band members are no longer 16, but their fans continue to sing along in youthful fashion. Favourite Worst Nightmare hit #1 on the UK Albums Chart on April 29, six days after it was released. Every track from the album has already charted in the top 200 UK Singles Chart, with Brainstorm hitting #7.

To celebrate the rise of independent music, Puddlegum has teamed up with Cornerstone Promotion and Domino Records to offer a free Arctic Monkeys Brainstorm 12". To enter the contest, subscribe to receive Puddlegum email updates. The contest will end May 12.
